I agree with you, Richard.
I was thinking also about a passenger whose ankle would be nearly touching the belt.
And luggage that could touch the rear pully.
Perhaps you could make a new, slimline belt/pulley guard, Jon ?
If you made the guard from some metal rod of about 5 to 8 mm diameter, then this would perhaps be just enough to satisfy Richard's and my safety concerns while giving you the slimmed down look you desire.
